Docker vs Podman in 2026: Is it finally worth ditching Docker Desktop?

With Docker Desktop licensing restrictions for enterprise and high memory footprint on macOS/Windows, a lot of teams have been discussing Podman.

For those who migrated to Podman for local fullstack dev (containers, compose, volumes), what was your real experience? Any breaking dealbreakers?

Here is an honest breakdown after 1.5 years on Podman:

Pros:
- Truly daemonless and rootless by default (much better security).
- 100% alias compatible for 95% of commands (alias docker=podman).
- podman-compose handles 90% of standard docker-compose.yml setups.
- Zero licensing fees or nag screens.

Cons:
- Volume file permission quirks on macOS can require tweaking virtiofs settings.
- Some complex third-party tools that interact directly with /var/run/docker.sock still require running podman system service to expose a socket.
On Linux servers, Podman is a complete no-brainer. On Windows WSL2, Docker Desktop is still slightly smoother for non-devops team members, but Podman Desktop has improved immensely over the past year.
