With Docker Desktop licensing restrictions for enterprise and high memory footprint on macOS/Windows, a lot of teams have been discussing Podman.
For those who migrated to Podman for local fullstack dev (containers, compose, volumes), what was your real experience? Any breaking dealbreakers?
Pros:
- Truly daemonless and rootless by default (much better security).
- 100% alias compatible for 95% of commands (
alias docker=podman).-
podman-composehandles 90% of standard docker-compose.yml setups.- Zero licensing fees or nag screens.
Cons:
- Volume file permission quirks on macOS can require tweaking virtiofs settings.
- Some complex third-party tools that interact directly with
/var/run/docker.sockstill require runningpodman system serviceto expose a socket.
