Looking to add Rust to my backend toolbelt this year. I've been writing Node/TS and Go for 5+ years. The borrow checker and memory management seem intimidating from the outside.
What resources or project ideas helped you get productive in Rust the fastest without getting stuck in theoretical weeds?
Recommended roadmap:
1. Read 'The Rust Book' (chapters 1 to 10 are non-negotiable for understanding ownership & borrowing).
2. Do 'Rustlings' exercises: hands-on compiler exercises that force you to fix real syntax and lifetime bugs.
3. Build something real immediately: write a lightweight REST API using
AxumandSQLxorTokio.4. Avoid fighting lifetimes early on: use
.clone()without guilt until you are comfortable with reference ownership..clone()is gold. Beginners often try to make zero-copy code on day 1 and get paralyzed by lifetime annotations. Once you start with Axum and simple data structs, Rust feels surprisingly pleasant.
