Hardware wallet security: Ledger vs Trezor in 2026 — which is safer?

Looking to move long-term crypto holdings (BTC, ETH, SOL) into cold storage.

After Ledger's controversial 'Recover' firmware update and Trezor's open-source Safe 3/5 line, which device is currently considered the industry gold standard for self-custody?

A clear security breakdown:

1. Trezor Safe 3 / Safe 5:
- 100% open-source firmware and hardware designs.
- Secure Element chip added to prevent physical pin glitching.
- Transparent, community-audited code.
- Best for: Pure self-custody purists.

2. Ledger Nano S Plus / Stax / Flex:
- Uses closed-source Secure Element (ST33 chip) which is bank-grade against physical extraction.
- Ledger Live app has the smoothest staking and multi-chain UX.
- However, proprietary closed-source OS means you must trust Ledger's internal signing architecture.

Verdict: If open-source verifiable code is your priority, go Trezor. If you want maximum physical hardware tamper resistance and multi-chain support, Ledger is still popular, but Trezor Safe 3 is the top recommendation for most users today.
Switched to Trezor Safe 3 last year. The peace of mind knowing the entire software stack is open-source and auditable on GitHub is worth it.
